“Marrying Absurd” by Joan Didion is a short story about very young girls who go to Las Vegas to get married. Most of us know the saying that has made Vegas popular “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!” However, that statement may not be exactly accurate. You ca get married and Vegas, but it definitely won’t stay in Vegas. It will have to come home with you. That saying makes Vegas appear as a place of irresponsibility and unaccountability, but that is not the case. When you make a decision, such as deciding to marry someone, then you will have to live with the consequences of your actions. And in this short story, these girls seem so young and psychologically underdeveloped that it appears to be criminal what is happening to them. Vegas has wedding chapels all over the place, especially along the Vegas strip; thus, making it convenient for these “marriages” to take place. Is this right? According to the story, all they need to get married in Vegas is for her “to swear that she is eighteen or has parental permission and a bridegroom that he is twenty-one or has parental permission. Someone must pay up the five dollars. Nothing else is required.” Is marriage more than this? What do you need in order to get married? Are there different requirements for getting married and being married? Are these marriages in Vegas really marriages?
