This essay will require you to perform a critical analysis and interpretation of Othello by William Shakespeare.

This should be an essay that tackles a specific theme (refer back to your first assignment). Note that your theme and thesis are not one in the same. There is a subject (your primary source), which is general, a theme (message, meaning, etc.), which is more narrow, and finally, a thesis (your argument based off of the theme), which is the specific focus of the essay. This should be the structure to follow for your introductory paragraph. A majority of the essay should be your own analysis of your theme and thesis, supported by quotes from your primary source. Do not fill your essay with long quotes or summaries of either the primary or secondary sources.

There is also a requirement of at least 4 secondary sources from the MVCC library that need to be included in your essay, which will help you to conduct research and incorporate other scholars/voices into your own work. At least 2 of the 4 secondary sources must be literary criticisms of the primary source. Other potential secondary sources would be biographical information on the author if necessary (although don’t fall into writing a biography of the author, this information should be in your essay to strengthen your thesis as it pertains to your primary source), psychological information from journals or textbooks that might assist you in looking at character(s) and their behaviors in your primary source, or historical information from textbooks or encyclopedias that might serve to contextualize the primary source you are writing on, or provide the framework for your analysis of your thesis. The primary source must also be documented on the Works Cited page. Therefore, there should be no less than 5 sources on the Works Cited page.

The essay must be 6-9 pages in MLA format, typed, double spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman, standard margins, page numbers, stapled, with a heading, and a title (refer to template). It should also include direct quotes form the primary source and secondary sources accompanied by correct MLA in-text citations, and a Works Cited page. Again, there should be no personal pronouns used in this essay.

If the final essay is not 6 full pages, not counting the Works Cited or contain less than 4 credible sources, it will automatically earn no higher than a “D” for not meeting the minimal requirements. If the final essay does not have a Works Cited page, it will automatically fail.
