MODULE 2 ESSAY ASSIGNMENT

First, based on the assigned textbook readings, please answer the following questions:

1. What is violence? Define the concept of inequality as structural violence, and explain how does inequality create stress and breakdown? For example, how does belonging to a group perceived as inferior affect wellbeing or performance? Support your answer with the relevant examples from the textbook. (Your answer should be 150-200 words long).

2. Briefly describe various types of public programs/strategies to fight poverty and diminish inequality. Which of them would you consider to be most effective? For example, should we (society) strive to provide people with education and/or better paying jobs or should we rely on economic growth alone to lift them out of poverty? Explain why? (Your answer should be 250-300 words long).

Second, after watching the PBS film, please answer the following questions:

3. What is this film about? Describe the children portrayed in the film (e.g., age, gender, race/ethnicity, education). Where do they live? Do their parents work? (Your answer should be 200-250 words long).

4. How did this film inform your understanding of poverty among children in the US? Why are they poor? Is it their fault? Is child poverty a public issue or private problem? What are the key causes of child poverty? Are these causes rooted in individuals or society? Please elaborate. (Your answer should be 150-200 words long).

5. How does this film illustrate the concept of inequality as structural violence? For example, how does growing up poor affect children’s school performance, self-esteem and life chances such as going to college, getting a decent job, playing football? What are the most stressful aspects of growing up poor? Support answer with examples from the film. (Your answer should be 200-250 words long).

REQUIRED FORMAT: This essay assignment should be 1000 – 1200 words long, typed single-spaced with normal font size (11-12 points). Your answers to the posed questions should be numbered (1, 2, 3, & 4, & 5), structured in into paragraphs and based on the assigned readings and Applied Learning Tasks only.
