Theoretical Orientation Paper: In no more than 8 pages, discuss your current theoretical orientation. Your paper should be written in APA style, 12-point font, double-spaced. Citations from 5 the assigned textbook, readings, lecture notes are sufficient, and you can (but are not required) to use additional sources. Your paper is due on TBD at the beginning of class. 3 points will be deducted for every day late.
In your paper please address the following: (also see separate sheet attached to this course outline for grading rubric)
1. How would you describe your personal theoretical approach to counseling?
2. What in your own life, both personally and professionally, shaped your choice?
3. What are your views of personal development and of personality?
4. What are your views about how symptoms or problems develop? About how people change?
5. What general theoretical orientations, as well as specific theoretical concepts or techniques, does your theoretical approach draw from? If your approach is integrative, please explain how the combination works together or complement each other. If your approach differs from all of the theories we have covered this semester, explain how it differs and why you felt the need to choose a new approach.
6. According to your theoretical approach, what are the therapeutic factors that contribute to change and growth? What are the goals you strive for with your clients?
7. Has your approach changed or evolved as a result of what you have learned in this course? If so, how?
All of the major aspects of the theory are detailed and explained, and applied to the case. The language of the therapeutic approach is used correctly. Terminology is clearly defined.
There is a polished and insightful presentation of the client’s issues from the chosen theoretical perspective. The analysis is comprehensive and in-depth, using the theoretical constructs to address the various aspects of the case. Analysis is done using the ideas and materials presented in the texts, readings, and class discussions.
There is a clear and cogent presentation of the presenting issue(s), an exemplary demonstration of understanding the elements and factors to be considered in the case analysis.
