Assignment: Writing the Persuasive Argument (Due Saturday, July 11. 2020)

Overview

The “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King, JR. was a response to a 1963 letter titled “A Call for Unity,” which was written by eight white clergymen and published in a local newspaper. The eight writers urged King’s demonstrators to cease their forceful civil actions and instead use the court systems to fight for their rights.

Read both arguments.

Writing Assignment:

Compare and contrast both arguments. Who presents a better argument? Why? What issues are we dealing with today? Are they still the same or different?

Must be a minimum of 600 words; indent paragraphs, and double space. Your thesis sentence should include your position on the issue, and you must underline it. Do not use such phrases as “I think, I feel, I believe.” Do not use 2nd person pronouns (you, your, yourself), and do not use contractions (can’t, don’t, haven’t, hasn’t). You may document references to your sources by paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, and synthesizing. I am requiring that you use sources from both arguments for this particular assignment to help prove your position on the issue. See MLA style of documentation from the Resource list above.

Your grade will be based upon the thoroughness, accuracy, and insightful responses; also, your use of correct spelling, grammar and correct sentence and paragraph format will be evaluated (ALWAYS spell check your responses), and/or use of outside sources, and MLA style.

In the heading of your paper include your name, date, course, and title of the assignment to the left of your margin.

Type your assignment in Microsoft Office Word document. Indent each paragraph, double space, 12-inch font, times new roman style. Save your file and submit as an attachment file.
