Salvage the Bones and On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous

Draft Due: Oct 30, 2019

4-5 pages double-spaced

Your paper should develop an argumentative and nuanced thesis based on one of the prompts below. You need to incorporate at least one peer-reviewed secondary source. Please bring 2 hard copies to class.

Prompts:

  1. From the buffalos in Vuong’s novel to China in Ward’s novel, animals figure prominently in both novels. How would you describe the human-animal relationship? In what ways have humans become animalized and/or animals humanized?
  1. Vuong describes Little Dog’s “journey towards desire as a journey towards self-knowledge.” What does he learn about himself? What knowledge does Little Dog attain? How does Esch describe sex? How does sex help her define herself in relation to others?
  1. Little Dog and Esch are young child narrators who confront their worlds with a certain degree of naivete. They grow up in poverty and without the guidance of parental figures. Nevertheless, they rely on the rich resources of language and literature to make sense of their lives. How does Little Dog experiment with language to give voice to his experiences? What are the possibilities and limitations of language? How does Esch understand her experiences through the myth of Medea?
  1. We’ve discussed how Little Dog desires to see and be seen. How else does Little Dog understand identity? What is the function of the gaze and recognition in Salvage the Bones? How does Esch’s sense of herself change over the course of the novel as she slowly embraces the role of the mother?
  1. Little Dog grows up in a community of women, or mothers, while Esch grows up in a community of men, absent of mothers. How do the maternal figures in Vuong’s novel and the absence of such figures in Ward’s novel shape the novels’ representation of motherhood?
  1. How do the novels portray the violence of American society? What role does toxic masculinity have in perpetuating this violence? How are these characters’ lives rendered disposable? How do the characters in these novels survive such circumstances? How do they salvage their lives?
  1. A topic of your own choosing. Please run your idea by me before writing the paper.
