Annotated Bibliography guidelines

  • Final draft must be complete, in APA style format, and submitted in pdf file format through Canvas
    • 2 scholarly, research-level books – These can be either seminal works in the key civil right/civil liberty/constitutional issue or they can be critical, scholarly research about the case, its decision, and/or its impacts.See below for details about what counts.
    • 5 peer-review research-level journal sources – These can be either seminal works in the key civil right/civil liberty/constitutional issue or they can be critical, scholarly research about the case, its decision, and/or its impacts.See below for details about what counts.
    • Must include citation of case – Annotation will be synopsis or summary of case and its decision
    • Must include citation of the majority opinion – Annotation will be a summary of the key decision logic and constitutional interpretation
    • Summary of the source
    • Paraphrasing or quoting of key material that you would normally intend to use for a final paper (even though you are NOT doing a final paper).NOTE: if you are directly quoting material, then you must include a page number for the directly quoted material (if you are directly quoting a documentary, then you give the time-stamp of the material)
    • Word count of the annotation only should be in parentheses directly after the end of the annotation.Do not include the source/citation itself in your word count.
    • Annotations are between 150-250 words each.
  • Fully graded and worth 45% of Project Grade

Ideally, the books and journal articles that you use in the AB are the same as the ones used in your Selected Bib; however, they do not have to be the exact same.If you selected a book and then found it was not relevant or as useful as a different book, then you are absolutely allowed to use the new book for the AB.You do not need to submit a new Bib to me in advance and you do not need to get my approval for the switch in advance.

Additionally, if a source in your Selected Bib did not count toward minimum requirements, then you are required to replace it for the Annotated Bib

Again, standard APA formatting of the sources (follow all guidelines for a standard References page, only you will be adding an annotation for each source)

Annotations must contain:

Failure to fall within the required word count will result in a one-letter grade reduction of the final paper

Writing style must conform to standard formal American English
