The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity funded the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s state physical activity and nutrition program $683,140 in 2020 (CDC, 2020). The overall program goal for my proposed program is to decrease the prevalence of adult obesity in Weld County, Colorado by 5% by December 31, 2026. With Weld County being the third largest county in Colorado, it would be ideal for just a portion of that funding to go to this obesity prevention program. One major challenge to using this specific source of funding is that Colorado’s health department already has a set plan to improve nutrition and physical activity among Colorado residents. There are a couple of components of this plan that do not align with my program like prioritizing breastfeeding practices and health standards in infants and children (CDC, 2020). It does however align with prioritizing healthy food options available at worksites and in the community as well as promoting physical activity options within the community (CDC, 2020). The objectives of my proposed program are to increase the number of adults who weigh themselves regularly, who understand the ways to prevent obesity, who exercise regularly, and who follow a healthy diet. With a topic like obesity, many objectives tend to compliment each other, so although my program will not touch on breastfeeding and childhood obesity, it will focus on the latter two parts of the health department’s plan as well as focus on other ways to prevent obesity.
